I’ll admit it: I felt just a little sheepish leaving our tour of Schramsberg, the second oldest winery in the Napa Valley and with a reputation for producing world class sparkling wines, with a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon that I had never even tasted. That said, I was told it was excellent, and I’m a sucker for Cabs.
The 2012 Davies Vineyards Cab Sauv was the star of the show at a recent Cab-lover’s gathering on my front porch that included many other big name and pricier takes on the varietal. Beautifully balanced with lush dark fruits and some incredible notes of subtle cinnamon and gingerbread to give it true complexity, this wine more than delivered. A gorgeous nose of the flavors featured on the palate and a long dry-but-not-too-dry finish, this was a total package wine from start to finish, and is on the short list of my favorite Cabs.
Available only from the winery at around $50/bottle, I recommend this one. 94 points on my scale.
